African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Fellowship Nomination Call

AAC

Dear Fellows of the AAS,

We are pleased to inform you that the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Fellowship Nomination Call is now open. Nominations are submitted by current AAS Fellows, however, individuals who are interested in becoming Fellows of the AAS may themselves approach an AAS Fellow to nominate them.

To date the AAS has elected 396 Fellows from 39 African countries.  The number of live fellows presently stands at 355 Fellows. For this call the aim is to ensure that we have Fellows from all African countries, hence we strongly encourage nominations from Angola, Cape Verde, Comoros, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Namibia, Niger, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles and South Sudan. Table 1 below show the Fellowship distribution by nationality.

More importantly, our goal is to increase the number of female fellows in 2018. Assuming that 200 Fellows know one female nominee, and that 100 Fellows know 2 nominees, and that 25 Fellows know 3 nominees (200 + 100 + 75 = 375); our target for 2018 in terms of women Fellows should be no less than 100 women. We encourage all of you to nominate all those female practitioners that you think are worthy of being fellows of the academy. There are certainly more than 100 women who make us proud because of their efforts, outputs and excellence. The AAS’s role is to recognise and promote excellence, and thus it is only fair that we do the right thing. The distribution of fellows by gender is provided in Figure 2 below.

It is an obligation for the Fellows to at least nominate one female candidate. Fellows who nominate and get at least 3 of their nominees approved for Fellowship by the Governing Council, will have their membership fees waived for 2 years.

All nominations must be submitted online on the AAS Ishango Online System (https://aasishango.ccgranttracker.com/ ). Please follow the attached instructions to submit your nominations.

Nominations must be submitted by 31 March 2018.
